Kat Armstrong is Project & Impact Manager at the Yorkshire & Humber Climate Commission, leading work on energy, health, skills, and community engagement across the region. Her practice focuses on governance and capacity building, strengthening democratic participation and collective leadership to accelerate a just and sustainable transition. Kat’s approach emphasises systems-level thinking, identifying practical levers for change, and building partnerships that embed justice into policy, legislation, and organisational practice.
With a background in linguistics and education, Kat values the power of language, empathy, and relational understanding in driving long-term change. She has extensive experience in local government, where she contributed to award-winning climate action plans centred on engagement, equity, and wellbeing rather than emissions alone. She sees health and climate outcomes as inseparable, connecting warm homes, clean air, access to nature, and active travel with community participation and systemic climate solutions.
At the Commission, Kat leads the Future Energy Forum, connecting energy system leaders to explore fairness, inclusion, and sustainability, and has partnered with the Supergen Energy Networks Hub to produce evidence-based recommendations for Local Area Energy Planning. She also supports the Health and Climate Partnership, linking regional NHS actors with climate initiatives to unlock opportunities for co-benefits.
Kat’s practice is guided by ethics of trust, shared credit, optimism, and listening, centring the voices of those most affected by inequality. She aims to contribute to the Practice-Builders’ Network by sharing insights from regional partnership work, exploring ethical collaboration under pressure, and learning from community-led approaches. Her goal is to strengthen both her practice and wider regional action for a fair, connected, and just transition.
