JUST’s first major report explores who, where, why and how a fair, low‑carbon future is being built in the North of England and beyond.
JUST refers to different forms of ‘joining up’. It means linking the push for low‑carbon living with efforts to tackle inequality, democratic decline, care challenges and the cost‑of‑living crisis. But it also means bringing together the people and organisations working on these issues.
Launched at our webinar on 4 March 2026, JUST’s Rapid Evidence Review explores the ways organisations across the UK are joining up climate action with efforts to tackle inequality, democratic decline, care challenges and the cost‑of‑living crisis.
Review authors Matthew Paterson, Lucie Middlemiss and Samanthi Theminimulle found several trends across UK regions, including:
- A wide range of initiatives linking climate action with social justice
- Cross‑sector leadership from government, civil society and business
- Emerging networks that strengthen learning and impact opportunities
- A substantial basis for stronger collaboration across this landscape
The report also found ongoing challenges, notably:
- Reliance on a small set of funding sources that create vulnerabilities
- Challenges of coordinating across multiple organisations
This early mapping shows just how much work is being done towards fair, inclusive climate action and the opportunities to build on it.
